Hurricane Ida dropped 10 inches of rain into our water shed in 2021, and our 250 year old earthen dam overtopped for the first time in memory. The need for dam rehabilitation, long in planning, has now become urgent.
Silver Lake in Lewisberry PA is a private, man-made lake of approximately 22 acres. It was constructed in the 1780's by Quaker settlers to power the local mill. In the 1920's the land around the lake was subdivided and sold, and small summer cottages were constructed. In 1945 the Silver Lake Community Association (SLCA) was formed, the first HOA in York County, PA.
Silver Lake is an economically diverse community - one we love and appreciate. Sewers came through in 1987-1988. Many original summer cottages were winterized, indoor plumbing added, and they provide year round living for residents. Other cottages have been replaced with modern structures in the last 30 - 40 years.
Many residents are now retired, often living on fixed incomes, while others are young, raising their families here on Silver Lake.
We are members of the Silver Lake community who are committed to finding creative financing solutions to fund the costly repairs our dam requires. There is substantial economic diversity in our community and we do not want the cost of repairs to force neighbors of limited means to have to sell up and move.
We are pursuing a self funding model where members provide interest free 20 year loans to the SLCA. In tandem, we are attempting to update our SLCA bylaws to provide greater transparency as to the actions and decisions of the board.
We seek to open meetings, of the SLCA Board and bylaw revisions to mandate transparency .
